Metin Akay

Chair

Prof. Metin Akay received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey in 1981 and 1984, respectively and a Ph.D. degree from Rutgers University in 1990.

He has played a key role in promoting the biomedical education in the world by writing several prestigious books and editing the Biomedical Engineering Book Series published by the Wiley and IEEE Press Prof Akay is author/coauthor/editor of 14 books and giving more 50 keynote, plenary and invited talks at the international meetings including the first, second and third Latin-American Conference on Biomedical Engineering'98, 01, 04.

He is the founding chair of the Annual International Summer School on Biocomplexity from System, to Gene sponsored by the NSF and Dartmouth College and technically co-sponsored by the IEEE EMBS, of the Satellite Conference on Emerging Technologies in Biomedical Engineering. He is also the founding chair of the International IEEE Conference on Neural Engineering, in 2003. These activities were sponsored by the NSF and largely attended by the women and minorities.

   
Yasemin Akay

International Program Chair

Dr. Yasemin M. Akay is currently an Intructional and Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Cullen College of Engineering, University of Houston. She received her B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey in 1980 and M.S. and Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering from the Rutgers University, Piscataway, NJ, USA in 1991 and 1998, respectively.

She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Physiology and Pharmacology Departments, Dartmouth Medical School and at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Boston University, School of Medicine. She was also an assistant editor for the IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Book Series from September 2001 to May 2004 and managing editor for the Wiley Encyclopedia of Biomedical Engineering from May 2004 till present. Her current research interests include Molecular Neuroengineering, Neural Growth and Neurodegeneration.

�zg�ren

Local Area Chair, Member, Scientific Cmmittee

Prof. Murat �zg�ren is the vice rector of Dokuz Eylul University and a member of Department of Biophysics, Faculty of Medicine, Dokuz Eylul University. He is also chair of executive board of DEPARK technology development zone. He is the chair of Sleep and Conscious States Technology Research and Application Center and also a member of the Brain Dynamics Research Center. He is the associate editor in the journal of �Sleep and Biological Rhythms�. Additionally he is a delegate of European Strategic Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), as well as having served as chair of Health and Food Strategy Working Group. He is the associate-editor of Sleep and Biological Rhythms Journal and is the member of the Editorial Board of World Journal of Anesthesiology. He reviews manuscripts for a number of journals ranging from Brain Research to Neuropyshcologia. He is the founding member of the proposed initative of "International Sleep Science and Technology Association (ISSTA)

Dr. �zg�ren's research interests include applied brain biophysics, signal processing, information processing in the brain, multidisciplinary and translational studies in the cognitive science incorporating memory, sleep and pathological processes. He

   
Adile �niz

Local Area Co-Chair, Member, Scientific Committee

Prof. Adile �niz is currently chair of the Department of Biophysics in Dokuz Eylul University Medical Faculty. She currently is the project coordinator of BIOIZMIR, an integrative project which is part of the first Health Technopark of Turkey. She is also editor in chief of DERIN (Dokuz Eylul University Journal of Research and Innovation). Her research interests are application of cognitive processes, learning, brain dynamics, sleep, electrophysiology and oscillations, brain pathologies. She is a group psychotherapist and psychodramatist. She was the secretary of National Biomedical Engineering Congress (2009), which was bridging Engineering and Medical Faculties. She was in organizing committee of the two Brain Biophysics Workshops in Izmir and local organizing committee of 13th World Congress of Psychophysiology- The Olympics of the Brain in Istanbul (2006). She is a member of Brain Dynamics Research Center of Dokuz Eylul University. She is in DEU-BAP, TUBITAK, and COST Projects as a coordinator, advisor, and researcher.

Andrei Dragomir

Dr. Andrei Dragomir received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Politehnica University, Bucharest, Romania in 1999 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

Andrei joined the Harrington Department of Bioengineering at Arizona State University as a postdoctoral researcher in December 2006 and is now an Instructional and Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Cullen College of Engineering, University of Houston.

   
Ting Chen

Dr. Ting Chen received his BS and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Arizona State Univesity. In 2010 he joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston as postdoctoral researcher. He is now Instructional and Research Assistant Professor .

   
Ming Jack Po

Publicity Chair

Ming Jack Po is a product manager at Google working on healthcare. Previously, he led BioDesign at Columbia University, where he also did his MD / PhD. He focuses on productivity, healthcare, math, and gadgets.- Jack started his entrepreneurial journey in the late 1990's as a high school student at Stuyvesant High School. He co-founded and led the technology team at a venture backed startup before being recruited to Wall Street by quantitative hedge fund D. E. Shaw & Co. Since that time, Jack has expanded his entrepreneurial activities outside of internet technology into medical devices. Jack is a 2011 Global Shapers at the World Economics Forum, a 2011 InSITE fellow, a 2011 Fellow in the Startup Leadership Program in New York, and currently serves on the board of several companies and non-profit organizations.
 

   
Kathryn Nielsen-Mossman

Publicity Co-Chair

Kathryn Nielsen-Mossman is a recent graduate of the Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas, where she is currently working as a technical assistant for the Biomedical Engineering department. She has had a passion for engineering and medicine since her early childhood, and greatly enjoys using a combination of the two to develop solutions to challenges in global health care. She is also involved in developing a device for assessing motor function in patients with various levels of paralysis, in collaboration with Houston Methodist Neurological Institute. When outside of the lab, Kathryn enjoys spending time with her husband and keeping up with their 18-month old daughter.
